Why slipped discs happen and how to prevent them

Slipped disc or a disc prolapse usually happens when there is too much pressure applied on the intervertebral disc. The intervertebral discs can be found between the vertebrae. The function of the intervertebral discs is to allow the vertebrae to move a little. It also holds the vertebrae together.

When too much pressure is applied on the front part of a disc, it’s squeezed backwards causing a rupture. Furthermore, the center of the ruptured disc sometimes weighs against a nerve root resulting to pain when a patient bends forwards.

Although it is a logical advice to avoid bending forwards to avoid the pain, it’s more likely for you to develop a fear in bending forwards, making your neck more stiff, resulting to a much worse pain.

The real problem is when people bend because they think it’s better than to “fold”. For instance, when people bend forwards, they think that it’s less harmful to the spine when they don’t fold their legs while doing it. But it’s actually the other way around. Bending forwards without folding your legs, like when picking something up, is way more harmful for your spine, especially in the lumbar area.

Our spine is structured so to move as one piece, bending as minimally as possible, and only at the top and bottom. When you bend forwards, the middle part of the spine also bends, which you understand now to be dangerous.

Slipped disc happens due to a number of reasons, some which you don’t even think can harm you like sitting for long hours as when driving, and constantly bending forwards without folding your legs. To find out more about slipped disc symptoms, you should consult your doctor, especially if you’ve been experiencing back pain, whether it’s in the upper, middle, or lower part.

A slipped disc may go unnoticed until there is already too much pain, in which cause is already a bad sign. So to avoid any major injury, always practice preventive measures and make sure you attend to any kind of injury, even if it’s just a mild one.
